technical information & problem resolution

Standards Compliance

This site has been designed and developed to be compliant with W3C standards. As such, any standards aware user-agent should be capable of rendering this site as intended. However, there may be instances where certain user-agents (legacy or otherwise) may exhibit unexpected 'quirks'. If this is the case then any issues arising will be as a direct result of the user-agent incorrectly processing the standards compliant markup and/or CSS within this site.

For you information, the standards we have adopted within this site are as follows:

  • XHTML 1.0 (Strict)
  • CSS 2.1

For those amongst you who may be interested, the W3C online validators for the above can be found at http://validator.w3.org/ and http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ respectively.

Browser Compatibility

There are a number of well documented problems with certain user-agents, especially older versions thereof. These problems include the use of the PNG image format with alpha channels and the inability of certain user-agents to correctly handle such images. Whilst this site makes use of PNG images with alpha channels any rendering issues should have been negotiated satisfactorily.

Note: The solution to this problem is primarily Javascript based, so you may still notice unwanted image artifacts when using IE5.5/6 with Javascript disabled. If this is the case you will need to enable Javascript to be able to view this site as intended.

Unsupported User-Agents

This site does not provide specific support for any version of Internet Explorer (running on a Windows platform) prior to version 6. Furthermore, it does not provide specific support for other user-agents utilising outdated and/or modified versions of the Trident, Gecko, Presto or WebKit rendering engines.

Other User-Agents

Although this site may display correctly on some handheld/mobile devices it has not been developed for use by non-computer based user-agents such as those found on handheld, mobile or other similar devices.

Problems & How to Report Them

If you are experiencing problems whilst viewing/using this site please feel free to email us after reviewing the information below in Always Seeing 'An Invalid Referrer Was Detected' After Submitting a Form? and Always Seeing 'Object moved...' After Submitting a Form?, or alternatively you can contact us here. We will endeavour to respond to all error reports (where a response is requested) within one working day.

Guidelines on submitting a useful error report are given below:

Please be aware that it will be difficult to respond to and address any problems that you may experience if you do not include at least the following details:

  • Your platform i.e. Windows, Linux.
  • Your OS i.e Vista Ultimate, Ubuntu 7.1
  • Your user-agent (browser) vendor and version i.e. Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3
  • The full URL of the page you were accessing when you experienced the problem including any querystring values present at the time. (You should be able to copy & paste the URL from your user-agent address bar if you have not been redirected to an error page. If you have been redirected to an error page you should copy and paste the URL which is listed on the error page as the 'Referring URL' [if present]).
  • Any other (polite!) details you think important.
  • Please also indicate if you require an email response from us about the issue. (If you require a response then don't forget to tell us your email address!)

An example fault report may look like the following:

Platform: Microsoft Windows
OS: Vista Home Premium
Browser: Opera 9.24
URL: http://www.standrin.com/viewItem.aspx?sr=aa01
Details: I am unable to view the item details. I am being redirected to an error page.
Response Required: Yes
Email Address: <your@email.address>

Please note that whilst we have made every effort to ensure that this web site automatically notifies us of all important application or hardware failures, there is always a small chance that network problems could impact upon the inbuilt error notification & alert system. Therefore if, in the event of an error, you should decide to forward us an error report, please try to include as much information as possible. Doing so will enable us to react as quickly as possible to any errors and/or failures.

Seeing 'An Invalid Referrer Was Detected' After Submitting a Form?

If you find that you are, after submitting a form, being redirected to this error page stating that 'An Invalid Referrer Was Detected' please check that your user-agent has referrer logging enabled. If referrer logging has been disabled then your user-agents advanced settings have, in all probability, been changed from their default installation state. (If you don't know what we are on about, it is likely that this is not the cause of the problem).

Opera users should go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network (or just press F12) and place a check mark in the "Enable referrer logging" box.

Firefox users should type 'about:config' into the address bar and then scroll down until you see an item labelled 'network.http.sendRefererHeader'. (At this point remember or write down the original value). Then double click the item and enter the number '2' into the box.

Hopefully this should solve the problem. If it doesn't you are encouraged to submit an error report.

If you would like to find out why we require referrer logging to be enabled please read the section entitled 'Defensive Programming Models: Why We Enforce Referrer Logging' below.

Seeing 'Object moved...' After Submitting a Form?

If you are finding that you are seeing a message starting 'Object moved' after submitting a form within this site this is most likely because your user-agent has declined to process automatic redirection. If this is the case, your user-agents advanced settings have, in all probability, been changed from their default installation state.

Opera users should go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network and place a check mark in the "Enable automatic redirection" box.

Why We Use Referrer Logging

In an effort to minimise this site's exposure to a number of commonly exploited loopholes found on many web sites, we have made a conscious decision to implement a defensive programming model that helps protect a web site from vulnerabilities arising from problems such as 'open redirects'.

The model that we currently have in place uses referrer logging to enable this site to attempt to identify the source of incoming data. If the web site (or any of the applications behind it) detect that data is being sent to this application from a disallowed source, or is(are) unable to identify the source of the incoming data then the application code will refuse to process the incoming data. The user will be directed to a suitable error page notifying them that the application is deliberately refusing to process the data.

If you are seeing such errors, please be aware that this behaviour is by design.

Most of the time this situation will occur as a result of a user changing an advanced user-agent setting from it's default installation value. Of course, it could also be because a non-spoofing script or application from another site is attempting to post data to this site without our permission!
